Law School that Fits You!

Start with WHY!

We Got You

  • Preparing You for Success

Summer Before Law School Courses & Events

Summer Student Success Programs – non-credit courses for entering students wanting to get an early start acclimating to the rigors of legal education.

    • Academic Excellence Academy – Free to all entering students. Start learning and practicing the core skills needed for law school success including time management, reading/briefing cases, and organizing and outlining materials.
    • Introduction to Legal Writing – Get the jump on developing legal reading, analysis, and writing skills. Information about the course (dates and costs) is sent automatically to all accepted applicants in March. We offer both day and evening sections.

Admitted Student Events – Special events for our entering students include:

    • Annual Summer BBQ – New students are enthusiastically greeted by faculty, staff, alumni, and current students as we start getting to know our incoming class and celebrate the beginning of the law school journey.
    • In Good Company - a unique opportunity to enjoy an intimate meal with professors and students who share your passion in a specific legal discipline/practice area.  Invitations distributed via email.
    • Southwestern Connections – Hop on the Criminal Justice or Entertainment & Media law bus to see Southwestern Alumni in action (on the bench, in chambers, in his/her office) – then compare notes and network with faculty, alumni, and your future student colleagues at a stylish Los Angeles eatery.
    • Student Group Events - Some student groups host social events before classes start. Show up your first day of law school with a built-in network.

Entering Student Scholarships - Southwestern awards a select number of merit scholarships to entering students demonstrating exceptional academic promise including book scholarships, housing scholarships, and tuition scholarships. Criteria include strong undergraduate GPA, LSAT scores, leadership potential, and other notable personal accomplishments.  All accepted first-year J.D. applicants are eligible for Wildman/Schumacher Scholarships.  NOTE: A student may not receive scholarship funds from Southwestern exceeding current tuition.

Financial Aid – Southwestern’s Financial Aid Office helps to secure financial aid for all qualified applicants who would be unable to attend law school without such assistance.  Aid in the form of federal loan programs, non-federal private/public loan programs, merit- and need-based scholarships and Federal Work-Study funds are available to Southwestern students.  We are also fully approved for J.D. students wishing to utilize their U.S. veterans’ education benefits. Typically, about 90% of our students receive some form of financial aid.  Our friendly staff (Lina & Suzanne) are eager to meet and work with you.

Southwestern really prepares their students prior to entering law school. They have a legal writing seminar and an academic excellence academy. Southwestern offers a bunch of events that really allow you to network with faculty and alumni.

My favorite for admitted student events are the bus rides that we do. For students not only to begin to see who they're going to be in class with, but to actually begin to get a look at some of our graduates and the great work they're doing. We typically go to the courthouse and meet one of our alums who is on the bench.

The network at Southwestern is so expansive. I attended the Latino Law Students Association's "Bienvenido brunch." So I came in already with contacts.

Our financial aid office on campus is very beneficial. They really meet the specific needs of each and every student.

Really simple application, too. It's one application to apply to a huge number of scholarships. And as a single mom, of course, I'm always thinking about finances and budgeting. And through the scholarships here I didn't have to worry.

We're a school that will look at students who may not have traditional backgrounds and say, if you've got the smarts and you've got the heart, if you're interested in becoming the best lawyer you could possibly be we're interested in you.
